Photos from the late 1800s
(Please allow time for the thumbnails to load before clicking on them.)

July 4,1897 - This is the Chemical company that ran from the City Hall at 5th & Main Streets in Wellsville.
July 4,1897 - This is the Hose company that ran from a shed type building at 13th & Center Streets in Wellsville.
Note the fancy leggings the horse is wearing!
July 4, 1897 - This is the Ladder Company that ran from the City Hall at 5th and Main Streets in Wellsville.
In 1908 the Fire Department moved into the former Catholic Church in the 900 block of Main Street, Wellsville. The entire floor had been cut out and raised to form a second floor. The floor was suspended from the roof rafters using 1¼" steel rods. Yes that is right, the floor hangs from the rafters!
FYI: The white mare is Flora and the black one is Bill.
This is the interior of the "new" fire station. Chief A.W.Phillips and fireman Elmer Haney are in the foreground. Note the tin ceiling and the slide pole from the second floor. The Chemical Wagon is on the left, the Ladder Wagon center and the Hose Wagon at right.
This is believed to be the Drum & Bugle Corps that the W.V.F.D. sponsored in the late '30's and early '40's.
Do you remember school fire drills?
This was Fire Prevention Week 1963 at the Catholic School in Wellsville.

We would like to thank retired fire fighter Robert "Bob" Lloyd for sharing his
knowledge and wonderful collection of vintage photos with the WVFD Website.
